The exuberant and rich music on the program makes the connection between (summer) nature and the human soul. In his motet “Silete Venti,” Handel compares storms with disruptive forces in life. But the soprano is steadfast and forces the wind to subside to give her soul rest and contemplation. In the strings, rippling waves of a soothing stream can be heard.
In his wedding cantata “Weichet nur, betrübte Schatten”, Bach clears the morning mists and encourages the bridal couple to enjoy the marriage. Where the strings represent the mists, the melancholy is reflected in the sound of the oboe. In another aria this instrument represents a mischievous satyr and a Gavotte is danced in the forest. The bridal couple is surrounded by blossoms, depicted by lovely violin melodies.
Both works, which allow the soprano to shine, alternate with a “summery” double concerto for recorder and solo bassoon by Telemann.
