Accademia Amsterdam ensures "wonderful moments"
Bach's Matthäus Passion, performed in the wonderful church of Edam.
The instrumental soloists from Accademia Amsterdam ensured wonderful moments, collaborating with soprano Martha Bosch, tenor Christian Dietz and baritone Tobias Scharfenberger. The solos from the choir were also sung well and realistic.
The soloists sang the arias almost without vibrato, which greatly improved their expressiveness.
The Arioso 'O Schmerz' for tenor and choir and 'Aus Liebe' that fragile aria, were beautiful. In the 'Erbarme dich', the second violin made with long notes the trinity with the vocal soloist and solo violin, like a Pieta. And 'Am Abend da es kühle war' remains a special moment. More special details could be heard this evening.

[...] Na het openingskoor stonden de hoofdpersonen centraal tussen de twee koren in het orkest. Naast het kistorgel Leon van Liere die helder en zeer goed verstaanbaar het evangelie verkondigde. Voor hem stond Pierre Mak die met lange klinkers een warme Christus neerzette en iets later een diepe lage ‘Tod’ in Recitatief 24, ‘Meine Seele ist betrübt…’ Beide zangers leverden de hele avond een constante bijdrage, de evangelietekst volgend en waar nodig het drama accentuerend zonder theatraal te worden. Dit gold ook voor de vier solisten die met groot inlevingsvermogen de aria’s –veelal uit het hoofd- vertolkten.
[...] Bij het verlaten van de kerk, vrijdagavond 30 maart, hoorde ik meermalen dezelfde opmerking: misschien is dit één van de meest mooie uitvoeringen van de Mattheus Passion die ik hoorde.
